At the St. Bernard and Reading branches of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, the children’s play and lounge areas are illuminated by modern commercial pendant lighting adorned with whimsical and inspiring words. Christine Madden from Champlin Architecture collaborated closely with the library lighting team to create a welcoming and imaginative environment for young explorers. Central to this vision was the integration of custom graphics, designed to engage and delight.

“The director envisioned a playful mix of words typically associated with libraries and expressions of a love for books,” Christine recalls. Words like “shhh,” “love books,” and “time” were selected to evoke curiosity and joy. The placement of these words was equally important; the design encourages children to look up from the floor, as the building features soaring ceilings and an abundance of floor-to-ceiling windows. The solution? Striking modern library lights that are both subtle and eye-catching.

This is where Lumetta’s custom capabilities shined. They crafted multiple Lite drum pendants, with white acrylic tops and etched white bottom lenses, all showcasing custom-printed graphics. The pendants were strategically staggered in height and arranged to fill the light-filled spaces effectively. “At night, these custom pendants glow like lanterns visible from the street, capturing children’s curiosity and providing a sense of levity for adults,” Christine adds.

Hasenstab Architects recently designed an addition to the Considine Professional Building at Akron Children’s Hospital, making use of Lumetta’s Shadow drum fixtures and Double Bar pendants.

In conceiving the design of the space, Hasenstab Interior Designer Carla Cremers considered the promotion of a feeling of enhanced well-being by decreasing stress and creating positive distractions.  “Due to the Shadow drum and Double Bar pendants’ modification capabilities in terms of sizing and inner diffuser options, they were easy selections”, she notes.

The lighting modifications introduced enabled Hasenstab to achieve design continuity with other fixtures in the space. Carla underscores that: “Clear wayfinding is key in decreasing stress. This was also attained by emphasizing floor color themes with the vibrantly matching Lumenate® inner shades and coordinating TransLumenate® shades, for the Shadow drums”.

The Shadow drums are surface mounted at 48” OD x 15” H, using D921 Trans Cool TransLumenate® for the outer shade and D57 Apple Lumenate® (Fresh) for the inner shade. The same inner and outer shades were used for the 3-Tier custom Drum pendant measuring 28” OH x 28” OW, located at the Mahoning Valley location. Double Bar pendants PB660 feature D35 Grid Chalk Lumenate® under the Whimsy family with an F8 steel finish.

Champlin Architecture

When Champlin Architecture was tasked with the complete renovation and expansion of the Patton School of Education’s McCracken Hall, they reimagined the College with a dynamic space layout and architectural expression. The design goal was to accentuate the ceiling height and volume in key spaces. In terms of lighting design, this meant achieving visual symmetry with larger lighting of a simple, bright color, displaying diagonal design attribute. How did these considerations come into play with Lumetta’s telescopes?

Champlin’s Michelle VonderBrink, Interior Design Associate, explains: “A cluster of these pendants hanging at various heights provided the look of larger lighting without distracting from the design elements in the space around and below them. To coordinate and highlight some existing features of the space, such as original wood ceiling, brick wall, the bold, darker paint colors implemented throughout the design, we kept the color of the lights simple and bright. Diagonal design elements were incorporated into the plan to draw the eye through main spaces. Lumetta’s telescope carried these desirables and coordinated well with the overall design idea.”

To integrate the lighting for the ceiling and walls, custom sconces in the telescope design were commissioned. “It was great to be able to create something unique for our client and project and also very cool to see it become a standard product!”, Michelle enthuses.

Both the pendant and the sconces utilized D61 MT White shade from the Lumenate® Fiber collection. Each P600 23” telescope measured 6” OD x 23” H, with F2 powder chrome finish and featured LED lamping. The sconce dimensions are ADA compliant at 8” W x 4”D x 24”H.

Lumetta is proud to light up the Office Depot flagship store in Austin, Texas. The project team of Bruno Schloffel, Director of Architecture, and Corina Molloy, Sr. Director of In-Store Environment, appointed a combination of varied-sized luminaires from its Studio and pendant Drum collections: Traverse SL 18” Pendant, Drum 42” Pendant, Drum 23″ Pendant, and Xina 23″ Pendant, all utilizing LED lamping.

The flagship store is a new venture by Office Depot to sell a single platform of small business services and tools. The Austin flagship store is intended to create a new and unique shopping experience that amplified the BizBox platform. Fixtures were carefully selected to contribute to a finished space that encourages customers to stay and either work, wait for their printing projects to be finished at the copy center, or network with fellow business customers. Accent lighting over the sitting area provided a more intimate feeling that resembled a home office rather than one of a retail store. Lumetta’s sleek design and colors worked in harmony with the décor and color palette.

The applications of custom lighting are truly limited only by the imagination.
Case in point: Stantec’s visual treatment of custom ring luminaires in varied sizes, ingeniously grouped together to mimic the logo of a Massachusetts medical device company.

Sara Diem, Sr. Associate at Stantec US’s Boston Office, shares the ideation that went behind the project:

What was the design vision or inspiration?

We wanted to create a bold statement above the reception desk in the form of a light fixture. The ceiling height of the atrium space above the desk was positively soaring and we wanted the welcome desk to be marked as a stopping point. A large-scale light fixture, inspired by the company’s simple but elegant logo, did the job.

How did Lumetta help bring that vision to life?

With the help of our lighting design consultant, Lumetta took our conceptual images and engineered an actual working light fixture that looked and functioned just as we had imagined. We started from scratch knowing that Lumetta would be able to create our vision with their custom manufacturing expertise.

For lamping, Samsung with analog dimming, in varied sizes, provided just the right illumination for the space. Opaque Lumenate® for the top, bottom and inner wall, with frame finish in powder coat white, completed the look.

Isle of Capri Casino Ups the Ante with Lumetta’s Lighting for Their Parking Garage

Caesars’ affiliate Isle of Capri Casino Hotel located in Black Hawk, CO wanted a modern ceiling mounted luminaire that would illuminate their parking facilities and be visually stimulating.

While the upscale casino was working with specifier, Randy Burkett Lighting Design, it was decided that the lighting source for the large parking garage would benefit functionally and aesthetically with custom geometric lighting to dramatically enhance the space.

It was exciting to watch the project come to fruition as Lumetta created a completely custom-tailored multilateral ceiling mounted fixture with 17’ x 17’ dimensions. (Shown here with D74 GLS Blue Lumenate diffuser.)

The extraordinary lighting solution met the required visual and utilitarian specifications to be indelibly noted as a best-in-class design.

Two contemporary buildings were recently added to the Provo Missionary Training Center (MTC) in Utah, in answer to the Church of Latter Day Saints’ missionary growth needs. The MTC has long been a busy educational facility, training local and global missionaries for the church.

Various Lumetta drums figure in key spaces of these buildings, specified by Glumac Portland, a major engineering and construction firm focused on sustainability. According to Jesse Smith, Lighting Studio Lead, students spend rigorous hours in the MTC environment vs. a traditional higher education facility. In conceptualizing the design, a lot of effort was made to provide less formal spaces for decompression. The goal is to bring a hospitality feel to the facility so that specific areas evoke a feeling of home and a sense of relaxation without sacrificing drama and elegance.

The Glumac design team applied a variety of architectural palette in each space. To help tie lighting in, different luminaire finishes were explored in each area. Jesse shares: “Lumetta delivered a key component desired for this project: the use of 100% LED in all the lighting fixtures. This and their ability to make fixtures in almost any size and any finish we sought, assuredly integrated the luminaires with the design vision”.

The buildings showcase drum shapes almost exclusively, with slight modifications to display narrow and tall and wide and short shapes. In the main meeting center, large, 6 ft. diameter drums not only match the scale of the rooms but also provide sufficient light for classroom use. Individual student teaching rooms use the smallest drums to give the students a different feel— that of being in a home.

Lumetta now adds the Hesburgh Library Scholars Lounge, University of Notre Dame, to the list of prestigious academic presence for its luminaires.

Adam Kibbe, Collaborative Lighting Principal: “The idea was of dense clusters of large fixtures, loosely metaphorical for gatherings of people and coming together of ideas. The resultant look is very compelling and reads well both from within the room and from the passage outside, which is a heavily-trafficked axis of movement into and through the library”.

The tailored simplicity of 34” Drum Pendants using Lumenate® in Slate with top and bottom diffusers, worked well in clustering. This style embodied the clean aesthetic the lighting specifier sought and were equipped with dimmable native-LED lumens package. Lumetta also provided considerable material options and a commensurate level of fit & finish.

Located on one of the most pedestrian-friendly and vibrant retail streets in Boston, the Boston Public Library provides the city with a world-class civic monument. Noted architectural firm William Rawn Associates was tasked with the design challenge of honoring its landmark Johnston Building and simultaneously redefining it into the library of the 21st century, while famed architectural lighting expert Lam Partners brought the lighting vision to fore.

William Rawn’s team researched the design intent of the original building and extracted a set of core principles that preserve the successful elements of the original design. Several of the interior walls and floors were removed after entry to create a welcoming, civic scaled room dubbed the Big Urban Room, where Lumetta’s desktop luminaires figure. This room serves as both front door and a public gathering space for the city.

Brought in through Lam Partners, the desktop luminaires were custom designed to reference the original lamps in Bates Hall of the McKim Wing and help tie the two library wings together, in what was once an empty space. On Lam’s project webpage, the original lighting was described as: “…harsh and monochromatic”. “The new study tables bordering the central atrium have modern table-mounted task lights with green fabric shades, recalling the classic green-glass reading lights in the adjoining original McKim, Mead and White building.” Lumetta equipped the lamps with retrofit LED bulbs complete with USB outlets in the table lamp bases. Today, these tables are often the first to be claimed by patrons who find them highly practical for work/study but also a great location to see and be seen.

GMB Architecture + Engineering

When GMB Architecture + Engineering’s Paul Hector sought luminaries to provide the desired illumination for Caledonia High School’s new South Campus Building, he turned to Lumetta’s pendant drums along with a custom piece-a clover leaf luminaire that showcases precise metal work. The luminaires, installed in a variety of areas in the campus, provided the desired appealing soft presence, in both lit and unlit forms, all featuring Xicato modules as lighting source.

Here’s a short Q+A with Paul:

Q: Other than the soft presence, what were the prime project criteria?

Paul: The performance of the luminaire needed to be a primary light source for the space, along with durability and the ability to be cleaned.

Q: What was the design vision or inspiration?

Paul: The project’s design was influenced by the positioning of the building and to bring a connection to the site. A consistent feature was desired for the luminaire given daylight lighting conditions. The inspiration was to create viewpoints and outlooks with multiple focal points and depth; allowing the luminaires to be prominent yet also complement the adjacent luminaires and encompassing architecture.

Q: How did Lumetta help bring that vision to life?

Paul: Meeting the specific luminaire requirements. Especially providing the custom abilities to meet shape and finish.
