The pediatric ICU is a traumatic experience for patients and their families, and the intense nature of care can also be stressful for the medical staff. Because of these emotional and environmental challenges, the design team at Perkins+Will in Dallas approached the design of the unit at Children’s Health with a thoughtful, compassionate mindset. Led by Interior Designer Whitney Hendrickson, their goal was to create a supportive environment for patients, families, and staff, while incorporating the hospital’s signature style of refined whimsy. To achieve this, they chose an “Africa: Savanna and Jungle” theme, blending vibrant, natural elements with a calming, playful atmosphere.
Since many children are confined to their beds for extended periods—sometimes weeks at a time—the design team focused on creating a striking visual impact on the upper walls and ceilings, particularly around the nurses’ station. Bold, earth-toned illustrations of the savanna and jungle adorn the walls, while the luminaires transform the ceilings into whimsical “clouds.”
In collaboration with lighting representatives Hossley Lighting Associates, the light selection and patterns chosen features a combination of Echo drums with Abstract, Shell, and Tech patterns, intended to evoke soft, cloud-like elements. This hospital lighting solution was chosen for the ability to infuse the space with warmth and light, creating a sense of wonder. As Whitney Hendrickson explains, “The variety of Echo patterns and sizes allowed the luminaire clouds to refract light in a dynamic way, especially at night when half of the corridor lights dim. The goal was for these glowing clouds to become a calming, feature element to be enjoyed by everyone, and we achieved that perfectly.”
By partnering with trusted hospital lighting manufacturer Lumetta, and incorporating these innovative fixtures, the design team not only created an aesthetically pleasing environment but also contributed to a nurturing, healing atmosphere. The result is a space that provides comfort and support to both patients and staff, transforming a stressful hospital setting into one that fosters peace and well-being.
